I bought a Mr. Heater “Big Tough Buddy” heater this winter. The initial purpose was to heat my garage/workshop and the secondary purpose was to have a portable heater for disaster perparedness just in case. I also bought a Mr. Heater 12 foot hose to attach the heater to 20 pound propane tanks that I use for grilling. Also, based on recommendations from Mr. Heater and the internet I picked up a fuel filter to filter out any contaminants.
I attached the hose to my tank, screwed on the filter to the heater and attached the hose to the heater. I lighted the pilot light and all looked good until I tried to turn the heater to low and it started and then blew out. The pilot light stayed on. I tried several times and could not get the heater started.
After consulting Google, I grabbed my air hose and blew out the heater, the connectors where you attach the fuel hose and then the front gas outlet that lights the elements. I started the pilot light again, then low heat, then medium and then high, The heater worked perfectly and sure gave off a lot of heat. Much more than any heaters I have tried in the past.
I turned off the heater and was happy. That was until I tried to light it later in the day. I had the same problem and had to blow out the heater with compressed air and all was good.
I’m not sure what is causing the problem. I have tried it several times and have inconsistant results. Sometimes it fires up and others I need to clear it out with compressed air. A viewer on my YouTube channel youtube.com/@trezstech said I needed to add a fuel filter because of the oils that build up from the 12 foot extension hose. Well, I had already added that and still had issued.
I did also purchase a couple of Mr. Heater Fuel Keg refillable 1 pound propane bottles to use with the heater. I’ll try them and see if the issue goes away. Stay tuned for an update at some point in the future.
Here is the video I did on the issues I had with the heater “blowing out.”
