Hey everyone, it’s Trez here from Trez’s Tech! If you’re a senior (or helping a parent or loved one over 50), you already know technology can feel overwhelming. Smart lights, voice assistants, WiFi routers, streaming devices, security cameras… the list of gadgets in our homes keeps growing. But here’s the good news: you don’t need to be a tech expert to get started. You just need a simple notebook and five minutes.
In today’s episode of Trez’s Tech Podcast – Tech for Seniors 50+ – The List – I share the very first thing every senior should do when diving into tech: create “The List.”
Why “The List” Matters (Especially for Seniors)
Technology moves fast, and it’s easy to feel lost when you have multiple devices, apps, and accounts. Writing everything down in one place does three powerful things:
- Gives you clarity and confidence. Seeing all your tech written out makes it feel manageable instead of mysterious.
- Boosts safety and security. Passwords and logins are the keys to your digital life. Keeping them documented (and protected) prevents lockouts, forgotten accounts, or worse – sharing them accidentally.
- Makes learning (and family help) easier. When your kids, grandkids, or a tech-savvy friend wants to assist, they’ll know exactly what devices you own and how to access them safely.
This one simple habit turns “I don’t know where to start” into “I’ve got this under control.”
How to Create “The List” – Step by Step
It’s ridiculously easy. Here’s exactly what I recommend in the episode:
- Grab a notebook. Any spiral notebook or dedicated journal works. On the cover, write “Trez’s Tech Podcast” so you always remember where the advice came from.
- Label the first page “The List.”
- Start writing. Go room by room (or device by device) and list every piece of technology in your home. Examples:
- WiFi router (make/model, login username, password)
- Smart TV or streaming device (Netflix, YouTube, etc. logins)
- Voice assistant (Alexa, Google Home – account email and password)
- Smart lights or plugs
- Security camera or doorbell
- Laptop, tablet, or phone (main login)
- Any other connected gadgets (thermostat, vacuum, etc.)
- Add important details. For each item, note the login name, password, and any extra notes (like “Backup battery location” or “App name on phone”).
- Store it safely. Keep the notebook in a locked drawer, fireproof safe, or other secure spot at home. Never share your full list of passwords with anyone – not even family (they can help one device at a time without seeing everything).
Pro tip: Update “The List” whenever you add a new gadget. It only takes 30 seconds and saves hours of frustration later.
Real-World Benefits for Aging in Place
This isn’t just paperwork – it’s peace of mind. Seniors who keep “The List” report feeling more in control of their home tech. It reduces anxiety about forgetting passwords, makes it safer to experiment with new devices, and gives family members a clear way to support you without guessing.
It’s also the perfect foundation for everything else we’ll cover in the Tech for Seniors 50+ series: smart home basics, safe gadgets, WiFi tips, battery recycling, and more.
